Our Legal team serves as the custodian of our legal affairs, ensuring compliance, mitigating risks, and facilitating strategic decision-making. From contract negotiations to intellectual property protection, our scope is extensive and multifaceted.

About the role

The Senior Legal Counsel is expected to use experience and expertise in enterprise SaaS to support the company’s commercial business across EMEA and APAC. Aiven is an exciting, sales-driven environment and this role will be highly collaborative to help meet quarter-end goals.

Reporting to the Helsinki based Legal Director, you will take on a wide area of ownership including, drafting and negotiating agreements for SaaS, professional services and other transactions with our customers which includes customers of many sizes from many different segments and countries.

You will counsel Aiven’s go-to-market team on revenue generating transactions as well as strategic partnerships. There will be a strong emphasis on SaaS and complex PS agreements.

You will also own the data protection & privacy legal support and maintain and implement leading practices to ensure compliance with applicable data protection legislation.

Key responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate a variety of agreements for direct and indirect revenue generation, including SaaS agreements, marketplace agreements, order forms, professional services agreements, and partnership agreements with resellers and technology collaborators.
  • Ability to spot and solve issues related to intellectual property, compliance, risk management, privacy, cybersecurity, export/import, content regulation, and other legal issues. Ability to collaborate with colleagues on the GTM, Legal, Finance and Product functions to address those issues.
  • Ability and experience in interacting with executives and senior management on material issues related to commercial transactions.
  • Giving accurate and timely counsel to various business teams based globally on a variety of legal and commercial matters
  • Advise on risks and liabilities of proposed commercial transactions and implement legal initiatives to meet bold business objectives
  • Drive ongoing enhancements of templates, forms, policies, and processes to streamline and simplify deals and product/service terms.
  • Continuous improvement, scalability, and operational excellence in contract management, workflows, deal processes, and execution.
  • Work with various stakeholders to provide training and education to internal cross functional teams to assure conformity and consistency in application of legal policies and procedures as they relate to commercial transactions and other significant corporate transactions.
  • Support other general corporate matters, including marketing, sourcing, compliance and special projects from time to time.
  • Provide data protection and privacy legal expertise, guidance and direct support for operational execution
  • Review and negotiate data processing agreements and perform risk assessments
  • Review and develop qualitative internal policies and procedures
  • Coordinate and administer data privacy requests from the organization
  • Work closely with the business to provide sound, practical guidance and solutions
  • Maintain, create, and implement leading practices around data protection and security


  • Master of Laws (LLM) or equivalent from a university in the EU.
  • 7+ years of post-graduation experience as an in-house counsel and/or from a law firm in an international setting.
  • You have a strong track record of drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements, including sales, MSAs, software and technology agreements, and partnership agreements, as well as creating repeatable, scalable processes in an international setting.
  • Exposure to IPR matters, including drafting and negotiating IPR-related agreements such as licenses and assignments.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling complex legal matters and transactions.
  • Exceptional negotiation, drafting, and legal research skills. Interest and knowledge of workings of different technologies and solutions is desirable.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and client management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
  • You can work autonomously while exercising sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
  • You are comfortable making decisions and relish ownership over projects.
  • Fluent in English.
