- You will lead the development of Maps and SQL APIs. These APIs are the central piece of the CARTO platform and the cloud-native strategy. Other parts of CARTO (Workflows, Builder, deck.gl) are built on top of them. Since it’s a core API, performance and stability are the main concerns.
- Approximately 90% of your time will be spent in Node JS + Typescript. 10% working closely with product managers as a technical lead to ensure that all initiatives are aligned with the technical strategy and vision of the Maps API.
- Be responsible for the performance and stability of APIs with billions of calls per month and hundreds of thousands of users.
- Push Google BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift and Databricks to their limits. You’ll also get the chance to understand the internals of all these data warehouses.
- Work on defining and advancing new standards in the geospatial industry like spatio-temporal data or spatial indexes (h3/quadbin) to support visualizations of hundreds of millions of rows.
- Define new data standards to support the new requirements of the industry. For example: geoparquet or evolving the MVT format.
You offer
- A solid 3+ years experience as a backend developer, with a mature approach to the job and related tools and processes (git/GitHub, documentation, testing,...).
- Strong experience working with data-intensive APIs and one of the following cloud data warehouses: BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks or PostgreSQL.
- Strong knowledge of SQL and experience writing performance queries to read large datasets.
- You are familiar with managing performance with databases and concepts like indexes, clustering, partitions, etc.
- Experience in building scalable and high-performance distributed APIs.
- Know how to debug errors in distributed APIs using logging and monitoring tools
- Fluent using Docker.

- Experience working with geospatial technology and spatial SQL.
