At eleQtron, we are building the next generation of quantum computers based on trapped-ion technology. Our unique approach, using microwave-driven, laser-cooled ions is transforming quantum research into scalable, industrial-grade computing. We combine high-end optics, precision laser systems, and magnetic field control to develop reliable quantum hardware that solves today’s unsolvable problems.

We are looking for a Team Lead – Optics & Laser (f/m/d) to lead our growing team of physicists and engineers developing, maintaining, and optimizing our laser and optical systems for ion trapping, cooling, and quantum control.

Responsibilities:

As Team Lead – Optics & Laser, you will be responsible for both technical leadership and people management in one of eleQtron’s most critical domains. You will ensure that our optical systems meet the highest standards of stability, reliability, and precision required for scalable quantum computing.

Leadership & People Management:

  • Lead, develop, and motivate a multidisciplinary team of laser, optics, and experimental engineers

  • Foster an open, collaborative, and high-performance team culture

  • Conduct regular 1:1s, feedback sessions, and performance reviews

  • Support individual development plans and promote technical and personal growth

  • Drive team alignment with the company’s objectives and key project priorities

Technical & Operational Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the design, setup, alignment, and maintenance of laser and optical systems used in ion trapping and quantum control.

  • Maintain system reliability through robust documentation, calibration routines, and preventive maintenance.

  • Manage laser safety protocols and maintain compliance with relevant standards.

  • Collaborate with other teams (e.g., Vacuum, Electronics, Quantum Operations, and Control Software) to integrate optical systems into the full quantum computing stack.

  • Drive continuous improvement of beam delivery, optical stability, and automation of optical control systems.

  • Contribute to defining the technical roadmap for optics and laser systems within eleQtron’s hardware development strategy.

Strategic & Administrative Tasks:

  • Plan and allocate resources effectively across projects.

  • Participate in hiring and onboarding new team members.

  • Support IP generation and contribute to internal technical documentation and publications.

  • Ensure Laser & Optics strategy is aligned with the overall company objectives.

  • Collaborate closely with the CTO and VP of System Operations to ensure alignment with company objectives.

What you will bring:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering, Photonics, or related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with laser systems, optical design, and experimental setups in a research or industry environment.

  • Proven experience in leading technical teams (disciplinary or project-based).

  • Strong background in laser stabilization, beam delivery, optical alignment, and related diagnostics.

  • Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to translate complex topics into actionable plans.

  • Structured, analytical, and pragmatic working style with strong ownership and initiative.

  • Proven experience in leading technical teams (disciplinary or project based)

We value (Bonus):

  • Experience with trapped-ion experiments, laser cooling, or quantum optics.

  • Familiarity with optical simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, OpticStudio) and control systems (e.g., LabVIEW, Python-based automation).

  • Understanding of vacuum systems, electronics, and control hardware relevant to laser and optics integration.

  • Knowledge of intellectual property (IP) and patent processes in optics/quantum hardware.
