Job description

eleQtron develops full-stack quantum computers based on trapped-ion technology. Our approach combines laser-cooled ions, microwave and RF control, engineered magnetic field gradients, and advanced theoretical modelling to build scalable quantum processors. As our systems continue to grow in complexity and performance, predictive simulation tools are becoming a critical component for hardware development, calibration, optimisation, and fault-tolerant quantum computing.

To strengthen our simulation and software efforts, we are looking for a Computational Physicist / Scientific Software Engineer who contributes to the Deep Digital Twin Development (f/m/d).

Role Overview:

In this role, you will contribute to the development of a next-generation Deep Digital Twin software for trapped-ion quantum computers. You will work at the intersection of quantum technologies, numerical simulation, scientific computing, and software engineering, developing predictive models that connect microscopic physical processes to system-level performance metrics.

A key component of the position is transforming and extending existing research-grade simulation tools into a robust, scalable, and maintainable software framework. These tools will support hardware design, control optimization, system characterization, performance benchmarking, and the development of fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures.

The Deep Digital Twin is envisioned as a multi-scale simulation framework spanning several layers of abstraction, from ion trapping, control fields, and noise processes, through quantum state preparation and laser cooling to gate dynamics and reasout, ultimately interfacing with circuit-level simulators and quantum error correction workflows.

You will collaborate closely with theorists, experimental physicists, software developers, and engineers to ensure consistency between physical models, numerical simulations, and experimental observations.

Responsibilities:

  • Structure, develop and maintain a Deep Digital Twin framework for trapped-ion quantum computers, setting code and documentation standards

  • Refactor research code into robust, reusable software libraries, improving computational performance through profiling, optimization, and parallelisation

  • Contribute to software validation, benchmarking, and comparison with experimental data

  • Actively contribute to Deep Digital Twin extensions, translating physical models of trapped-ion hardware into scalable simulation tools

  • Connect Deep Digital Twin simulations to higher-level circuit simulators and quantum error correction workflows

Job requirements

Required skills:

  • PhD or equivalent industrial experience in Physics, Scientific Computing, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Solid understanding of quantum mechanics; background in quantum optics, atomic physics, or quantum technologies is advantageous.

  • Excellent Python programming skills and experience with scientific computing libraries (NumPy, SciPy)

  • Experience developing and maintaining scientific software projects

  • Expertise in refactoring research code into modular, maintainable software packages

  • Strong understanding of numerical methods, including linear algebra, differential equations, and optimization

  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices, including version control, testing, documentation, and code reviews

  • Familiarity with tools such as Numba, Cython, JAX, OpenMP, or similar performance optimization technologies.

  • Ability to work in an international and diverse team at the interface of theory, software, and hardware.

We Value

  • Experience with trapped-ion quantum computing systems

  • Knowledge of open quantum systems and their simulation

  • Hands-on experience with QuTiP or similar quantum simulation frameworks

  • Experience working in high-performance computing (HPC) environments

  • Scientific software development experience in quantum technologies, AMO physics, or a related field
