Propulsion Design Engineer (m/f/d)
Isar Aerospace
Mission Brief
As Propulsion Design Engineer with focus on engine cycle calculations you will be responsible for the implementation of engine models to provide load point predictions, engine performance uncertainty quantifications, and serve as the main person of contact to the Guidance Navigation and Control Team to provide engine performance models and parameters for the flight software. You will be working within the Turbopump Team and collaborate with system owners of all subcomponents of the engine.
Your Role in Our Space Mission
Key responsibilities within the Turbopump Team:
- Develop and maintain modular engine models of existing engines and fluid systems as well as conceptual engines in the development phase for engine load point predictions and performance studies.
- Coordinate with product owners and ensure model characterization of every subcomponent of the engine and maintain component performance database.
- Provide load point predictions during development and test campaigns and define acceptance criteria for flight engines / qualification tests with respect to engine performance.
- Serve as the main point of contact to provide engine performance metrices for the flight software to Guidance Navigation Controls and conduct uncertainty quantification for such metrices.
- Maintain database of characteristic parameters such as Isp and mass flow as well as lookup tables for engine transients.
- Maintain secondary engine models relevant for rocket kinematics in all phases of the mission such as thrust generated by chill down bleed flows, purges etc.
- Conduct conceptional engine performance studies in early development of future launch systems or iterations of Spectrum.
- Ensure consistent data acquisition quality of engine performance parameters in development testing, stage testing and flight.
- Define Sensor requirements for in flight performance verification of the engines.
- Elaborate uncertainty propagation of the entire measurement chain in collaboration with test rig responsibles to maintain a high data quality standard.
Qualification Checklist
- M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or similar.
- Exceptional knowledge in thermodynamics and rocket motor system architecture as well as sub system interactions.
- Knowledge in measurement technology and stochastic analysis (Uncertainty Quantification and propagation).
- Fundamental understanding of combustion, thrust chambers, valves and turbopump systems.
- Proven experience in developing and validating empiric, semi empiric or analytical models as well as setting up cycle models of complex fluid systems/machinery
- Effective collaborator in multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams, organized, detail-oriented, and proactive. Ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
- Driven and eager to learn, passionate about new space, fluent in English
Bonus Skills
- Professional work experience in rocket propulsion development.
- Working experience in Simulink or cycle model development in rocket/aircraft engines or similar
- Willingness to travel to support engine test campaigns and launch campaigns abroad.
