Description
We’re looking for a curious, ambitious, and hands-on researcher to join us as a PhD candidate in CVD Diamond Growth. This is your chance to dive deep into the science and engineering of synthetic diamond materials that power the next generation of quantum technologies.

Over the course of your PhD, you’ll work at the intersection of materials science, plasma physics, and quantum sensing - collaborating with leading experts from the Fraunhofer Institute in Freiburg and the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Your journey will begin in Freiburg, where you’ll master the operation and optimization of a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system for diamond growth. Later, you’ll move to Munich to continue your research, translating scientific breakthroughs into scalable, real-world processes.

You’ll get hands-on experience designing and running experiments, characterizing advanced diamond materials, and contributing to high-impact publications, patents, and prototypes that could shape the future of quantum sensing.

If you’re a physicist, materials scientist, or physical chemist with a passion for experimental work and a drive to turn ideas into reality, this PhD is your opportunity to grow at the frontier of science and technology.

Location

  • The first two years will be spent in Freiburg, Germany, after which the location of work will change to Munich, Germany, for the remainder of the PhD
  • The title will be from the Technical University of Munich

Who we are
Founded in 2022 as a spin-off of TU Munich, QD leverages quantum sensors to rapidly capture three-dimensional current maps within multi-layer chips. Our 30-strong team of physicists, engineers, and data scientists works side by side with major semiconductor manufacturers, helping them in chip debugging and accelerating their yield analysis. Backed by top-tier deep tech investors, semiconductor experts, and strategic public programs, we have ensured long-term stability, shifting from breakthrough to scale - and shaping the next chapter in chip testing.
Why join us?
Picture this:
  • A machine that catches what others miss – in milliseconds.
  • Physics, data, and engineering are working hand in hand to build tools that matter.
  • An international team, who loves solving hard problems and where knowledge flows fast.
Still unsure about why joining us?
  • You'll get to build a company together with a brilliant and welcoming team on a product that has never been done before.
  • Our technology is the cutting edge of tomorrow, starting today and not in 10 years.
  • You will work directly with major semiconductor companies from Day 1.
  • You'll get virtual shares and act on behalf of the entire company, beyond just your own team.
  • You’ll be part of a high-growth company backed by top-tier investors.
Let’s make the invisible visible!
What will you do
  • Operating a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth chamber for the growth of synthetic diamond for quantum sensing applications
  • Assist in the optimization and assembly of a CVD growth chamber in collaboration with experts from the Fraunhofer Institute in Freiburg
  • Develop and refine growth parameters to improve the performance of the NV-doped diamond material
  • Characterize diamond properties using spectroscopic, optical, and magnetic measurement techniques
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to transfer research outcomes into scalable production processes
  • Document processes, analyze experimental results, and present findings to internal stakeholders and scientific partners
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications, patents, and technical reports
What is expected of you
  • Master’s degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field
  • Strong background in experimental research, preferably in thin-film deposition, plasma physics, or crystal growth
  • Interest or experience in CVD processes, vacuum systems, or quantum materials
  • Ability to work independently in a laboratory environment with a hands-on, problem-solving mindset
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with data evaluation and experimental design
  • Motivation to contribute to high-impact semiconductor and quantum technology development
  • Fluent in English (German is a plus)
