Who we are - Our Mission
terralayr addresses the massive deficit in global energy storage.
The over-indexing of electricity generation from renewable energy sources leads to large volatility on the energy grid. The main problem is that wind and solar farms are fluctuating and, by definition, unsteady—there is no sun at night, and it is not always windy. This increases the need for flexibility in the form of battery storage systems to balance the grid in times when supply and demand do not match.
By buying and developing grid-scale storage assets and virtually aggregating them across a layer, we are creating the world's first energy cloud. Imagine AWS for energy. Through the flexibility we secure, we can market flexibility-as-a-service and hedging products/power insurance to utilities, SMEs, and industrial players and create virtual storage capacity for PV and wind farms.
What we are hiring for - Your Role
Currently, we are looking for an Engineering Manager (m/f/d) to join our team. While our main office is in Berlin, with a tech hub in London, we are also open to hiring fully remote team members – our ambition is to build the best team in the market, irrespective of the location where our talents are based.
As part of our Product and Technology team, you will be instrumental in building and maintaining our infrastructure, ensuring robust deployment strategies, and automating our operational processes. This role combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, distributed, fault-tolerant systems.
Successful candidates deeply care about having a positive impact on accelerating the energy transition. We are seeking a candidate who can strike a balance between swift execution and maintaining a high standard of work quality. Our ideal candidate is a team player who successfully collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, high-performance, and reliable frontend systems and services.
What you will work on - Your Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and support a team of engineers, helping them grow in their roles and careers. Facilitate regular feedback, performance reviews, and ensure a collaborative and inclusive team culture.
- Technical Strategy & Execution: Work closely with engineering and product leadership to define technical direction and priorities. Ensure alignment between business goals and engineering efforts, balancing speed, scalability, and technical quality.
- Delivery & Process Improvement: Oversee the delivery of high-quality software solutions by promoting strong engineering practices, effective planning, and continuous improvement in development and operational workflows (e.g., CI/CD, testing, documentation).
- Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to ensure clear communication and smooth execution across teams. Act as a bridge between technical and non-technical team members.
- System Reliability & Scalability: Guide the team in building robust, scalable, and secure infrastructure and systems. Support the evaluation and adoption of new tools or frameworks as needed to improve system performance and reliability.
- Innovation & Best Practices: Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices. Encourage a culture of learning and continuous improvement across the team.
What we are looking for - Your Qualifications
- Leadership Experience: A minimum of 4 years in a senior engineering or engineering management role, with a proven track record of leading and developing high-performing technical teams.
- Technical Acumen: Strong technical background, ideally with hands-on experience in software development, infrastructure, or DevOps. While you may not code daily, you're confident in making technical decisions and guiding architectural discussions.
- Cloud & Systems Knowledge: Solid understanding of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure), infrastructure automation, and scalable system design.
- People Management: Demonstrated ability to mentor, support, and grow engineers. Experience conducting performance reviews, facilitating career development, and fostering a culture of ownership and accountability.
- Strategic Thinking: Able to align technical direction with broader business goals, make informed trade-offs, and prioritise effectively across competing needs.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Comfortable engaging with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and capable of clearly articulating plans, challenges, and progress.
- Continuous Improvement: Passionate about process improvement, team productivity, and staying up to date with industry trends and best practices. Able to identify and drive meaningful improvements in how the team works.
