Upvest

Accounting & Finance
Berlin, Germany · London, UK
Posted on Nov 19, 2024

Upvest, founded in 2017, enables any financial institution to offer great investment experiences to its customers. Upvest is an investment firm regulated by the German supervision authority (BaFin). The company currently employs 170+ people across Europe with its headquarters based in Berlin, Germany.

The company is backed by the world’s largest venture capital funds and investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, BlackRock, Earlybird, HV Capital, Notion Capital, and ABN Amro Ventures, as well as by renowned fintech entrepreneurs (including Maximilian Tayenthal, founder of N26, and Felix Haas, founder of IDnow).

We’re looking for fintech enthusiasts to join us in creating the financial infrastructure of tomorrow. We’re building the first European Investment API to enable any financial institution offering a wide range of efficient and transparent investment products, such as stocks and ETFs in nominal, portfolio, and fractional form. Our mission and vision is to make investing as easy as spending money and enable the next 100m people to invest.

We’re based in Berlin but are also open to hiring remotely in Germany or London (UK) for this role. If you're currently based elsewhere but would like to move to Germany, we’re happy to support your relocation.

As Upvest enters the next stage of growth, we are looking for an exceptional VP or Director of Finance. You will work directly with our CFO Julian Lange building out the more analytical, forward-looking side of the Finance department, and also closely with our founder and CEO Martin Kassing to ensure Upvest reaches its ambitious goals:

Your mission:

  • You will lead building out our Financial Planning, Analysis & Impact (FPAI), Commercial Finance, and Data Analytics teams, each already led by an experienced lead and currently being staffed with additional (senior) analysts. From 5 people today, we will soon be 10+ here!

  • Upvest has entered its stage of hypergrowth, so we now have a lot more live data to analyze and base our financial and strategic decisions on. We’re adding new clients, products, geographies, and revenue streams and hitting new records on our platform each quarter, so there is ever more complexity to consider and our decisions become more and more impactful.

  • Partner routinely with the CEO and rest of the management team as well as senior members from all other departments across the company to ensure we grow strongly and “in the right way”, as well as achieve high, “software like” contribution margins as we scale.

  • Interact with new and existing investors and our Board regularly and play a key role in fundraising activities, both on the equity and debt side.

This role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Complete your world-class Finance skillset: From best-in-class tools and processes to your strategic role in business partnering, at Upvest you can complete learning Finance the modern/cutting edge way, so one day you yourself can become a sought after CFO! Julian has a proven track record of mentoring people and developing future leaders, you can be the next one!

  • Be part of a top-notch Finance function: We already built a strong team of 11 people, which means you can focus your energy on your core responsibilities and always have the support of true Finance experts at your fingertips. We are live with BigQuery/Looker, implementing the Netsuite ERP (along with Atlar and Payhawk) later this year and a modern financial planning & reporting tool early next, while also starting to bring AI more and more into our routines.

  • Tons of ways to leave your mark and make impact: We’re only a few years into our journey, so lots of things in Finance and across the company can still be implemented and developed:
    • Coordinate complex and high impactful decision making around business plans, budgets and scenarios together with the exec team

    • Drive positive client solutions with sharp analysis on pricing, ARR, and unit economics

    • Structure and negotiate deals with investors, banks, and partners/vendors

  • A very experienced team and culture driven organization at Upvest: We are one of Europe’s fastest growing fintechs/scale-ups thanks to having assembled a world-class team with lots of experience across all key domains that we require for our success, from banking and risk to regulatory, legal and compliance to - last but certainly not least - product and engineering. The organization is full of people who have successfully scaled companies before, who understand the importance and live and breath culture and “people first”.

Continuous learning: Your high quality colleagues, large areas of responsibilities and the room we leave people to thrive and develop provide for an incredibly rewarding learning experience. It is a great opportunity, if you also aspire to grow professionally and personally.

Job requirements:

  • You have 8-10+ years of experience from a mix of Finance, private equity, investment banking or top-tier consulting roles, so you already bring very strong financial acumen, modelling and transaction related skills to the table. Additional background at a hypergrowth startup/scale-up, ideally in a fintech or (infrastructure) software context, is a big plus

  • You know how to build interpersonal relationships and can influence and lead cross-functional discussions and decisions for real strategic and financial impact

  • You are always looking to learn something new, are interested and can get deep into the details (if needed), while not losing sight of the big picture and steering the overall effort in the right direction

  • You remain positive and solution focused and keep trying until you succeed, even when the situation is tough, something didn’t work the first time, or a mistake was made

  • You have leadership and people management skills proven by clear development success stories, high eNPS on your teams, and serving as a magnet for talent

Why Upvest?

  • We're working on solving a hard problem: fixing the European securities financial infrastructure that empowers more people to be able to invest. You have the opportunity to contribute to this change.
  • We invest in you. From access to a personal coach, development budget and plenty of opportunities to grow in your role.
  • We take hiring seriously with a strong focus on keeping a high bar when interviewing (equally important is that we hire decent people, who are passionate about their craft and helping us achieve our shared mission).
  • While we're not quite fully-remote, we are committed to being a flexible employer, as we understand you don't have to be in the office to do your best work.
  • We live a culture of empowerment, trust (that we hire the best people and get out of their way) and openness (there's a greater advantage in sharing information than keeping it to ourselves).

Our values:

  • Learn and grow. We aim high to shape our future. We give and request honest feedback knowing that we develop together. Progression over Perfection.
  • Team first. We make it easy for others. We value our differences and are open to others' opinions. We win and celebrate together! Team over Egos.
  • Own the outcome. Whether we win or we lose, we stand together. We are proactive and get the job done. Outcome over Process.
  • Tell the story. We always start with the why. We share knowledge to empower others. Transparency over Complexity.

Upvest is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees
